In plain words
Use up a forest faster than it grows and one day there's no forest. Conservation is about using what nature provides without running it down, and about stopping species disappearing for good.
Three things to know
- A sustainable resource is one that is produced as fast as it is removed, so it does not run out. Forests can be conserved by replanting, protected areas and education; fish stocks by quotas, limits on net size and closed seasons.
- Species become endangered through habitat destruction, hunting, pollution, climate change and introduced species.
- Endangered species can be conserved by monitoring and protecting them and their habitats, by education, by captive breeding programmes, and by seed banks.
Tips and tricks
- Sustainable means it can go on indefinitely: taken no faster than it is replaced.
- Reasons to conserve: keeping biodiversity, protecting ecosystems that provide food, medicines and fuel, and because extinction can't be undone.

Conservation: 5 questions and answers
These are the quiz’s questions. Do the quiz first, then come back here for the ones that got you.
What is a sustainable resource?
It will not run out.
Which helps to conserve fish stocks?
Limits allow the fish to breed.
What is a seed bank for?
The seeds can be grown if the species dies out in the wild.
Which is a cause of species becoming endangered?
With nowhere to live, a population falls.
What is a captive breeding programme?
Some are later released into the wild.
