In plain words

Training gives employees the knowledge and skills to do their jobs well, or to do new ones. It costs money and time, and businesses do it because untrained workers cost more in mistakes, accidents and lost customers.

There are three kinds to know.

5 things to know

  1. Induction training introduces a new employee to the business: the people, the rules, the workplace and health and safety.
  2. On-the-job training happens at the workplace, by watching and working alongside an experienced employee. It is cheap, fitted to the business, and the trainee produces while learning. But the trainer's own work slows down, and bad habits can be passed on.
  3. Off-the-job training happens away from the workplace, at a college or training centre. Experts teach it and new ideas come into the business. But it is expensive, and the worker produces nothing while away.
  4. Benefits of training to the business: higher productivity, better quality, fewer accidents, and more flexible and motivated staff.
  5. Benefits to employees: new skills, a better chance of promotion and higher pay.

Tips and tricks

  • A risk of training to remember: a newly qualified worker may leave for a better-paid job with a competitor.
  • Induction is for new staff only. If the question is about an employee who has been there for years, it is not induction.
