Measuring and apparatus Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry revision

In plain words
Good chemistry starts with choosing the right tool. A measuring cylinder is fine for "about 50 cm³". When the exact volume matters, as in a titration, you need a pipette or a burette. Half the marks in practical questions come from naming the right one.
Three things to know
- Volume of liquid: a measuring cylinder (roughly), a pipette (one exact volume), a burette (any volume, exactly). Volume of gas: a gas syringe. Also a balance for mass, a stopwatch for time and a thermometer for temperature.
- A solute dissolves in a solvent to make a solution. A saturated solution holds as much solute as it can at that temperature.
- After filtering, the solid on the paper is the residue and the liquid that ran through is the filtrate.
Tips and tricks
- Burette: variable volume, read to 0.05 cm³. Pipette: one fixed volume, such as 25.0 cm³. Measuring cylinder: approximate.
- To make an experiment more accurate, name a better piece of apparatus: "use a gas syringe instead of counting bubbles".
It lands in your notebook with its questions as flashcards.
Measuring and apparatus: 5 questions and answers
These are the quiz’s questions. Do the quiz first, then come back here for the ones that got you.
Which apparatus adds a variable volume of liquid accurately in a titration?
Its tap lets you add as little as one drop.
Which apparatus is best for collecting a gas and measuring its volume?
The plunger moves out as the gas collects.
What is a solvent?
Water is the most common solvent.
What is a saturated solution?
It is holding as much solute as it can.
Which apparatus measures out exactly 25.0 cm³ of a solution?
A pipette delivers one fixed volume very accurately.
