In plain words

Good chemistry starts with choosing the right tool. A measuring cylinder is fine for "about 50 cm³". When the exact volume matters, as in a titration, you need a pipette or a burette. Half the marks in practical questions come from naming the right one.

Three things to know

  1. Volume of liquid: a measuring cylinder (roughly), a pipette (one exact volume), a burette (any volume, exactly). Volume of gas: a gas syringe. Also a balance for mass, a stopwatch for time and a thermometer for temperature.
  2. A solute dissolves in a solvent to make a solution. A saturated solution holds as much solute as it can at that temperature.
  3. After filtering, the solid on the paper is the residue and the liquid that ran through is the filtrate.

Tips and tricks

  • Burette: variable volume, read to 0.05 cm³. Pipette: one fixed volume, such as 25.0 cm³. Measuring cylinder: approximate.
  • To make an experiment more accurate, name a better piece of apparatus: "use a gas syringe instead of counting bubbles".

Measuring and apparatus: 5 questions and answers

These are the quiz’s questions. Do the quiz first, then come back here for the ones that got you.

  1. Which apparatus adds a variable volume of liquid accurately in a titration?
    • a pipette
    • a burette (the answer)
    • a beaker
    • a measuring cylinder

Its tap lets you add as little as one drop.

  2. Which apparatus is best for collecting a gas and measuring its volume?
    • a beaker
    • a burette
    • a gas syringe (the answer)
    • a test tube

The plunger moves out as the gas collects.

  3. What is a solvent?
    • a solid that dissolves
    • a liquid that dissolves a substance (the answer)
    • a mixture of metals
    • an insoluble solid

Water is the most common solvent.

  4. What is a saturated solution?
    • a very dilute solution
    • one in which no more solute will dissolve at that temperature (the answer)
    • one that contains water only
    • one that has been filtered

It is holding as much solute as it can.

  5. Which apparatus measures out exactly 25.0 cm³ of a solution?
    • a measuring cylinder
    • a beaker
    • a pipette (the answer)
    • a conical flask

A pipette delivers one fixed volume very accurately.
