In plain words
A logarithm answers one question: what power? log₂ 8 asks "2 to what power gives 8?", and the answer is 3. Everything else about logs follows from the rules for powers.
7 things to know
- log_a x = y means a^y = x. The log is the power.
- lg means log to base 10. ln means log to base e.
- Adding logs multiplies the numbers: log x + log y = log(xy).
- Subtracting logs divides: log x − log y = log(x/y).
- A number in front becomes a power: n log x = log(xⁿ).
- For any base a: log_a a = 1 and log_a 1 = 0.
- Change of base: log_a b = (log_c b) ÷ (log_c a). A useful special case: log_a b = 1 ÷ log_b a.
Worked example
Write 3 + 2 lg p − lg q as a single logarithm.
- Turn the 3 into a log to base 10: 3 = lg 1000.
- 2 lg p = lg p².
- lg 1000 + lg p² − lg q = lg(1000p²/q).
Worked example
Solve log₃(x + 6) − log₃ x = 2.
- Combine the logs: log₃((x + 6)/x) = 2.
- Undo the log: (x + 6)/x = 3² = 9.
- x + 6 = 9x, so x = 3/4.
Tips and tricks
- The laws only work for logs with the same base. And log(x + y) is not log x + log y.
- To get rid of a log, raise the base to the power of the other side: log₃ A = 2 means A = 3².

Write 2 log 3 + log 4 as a single logarithm.[2]
Show answerHide answer
log 36. log 9 + log 4.
Solve lg(2x + 5) = 1 + lg x.[3]
Show answerHide answer
x = 5/8. lg((2x + 5)/x) = 1, so 2x + 5 = 10x.
Evaluate log₄ 8.[2]
Show answerHide answer
3/2. Changing to base 2: log₂ 8 ÷ log₂ 4 = 3 ÷ 2.
Answers: Logarithms and their laws
- 1. log 36. log 9 + log 4.
- 2. x = 5/8. lg((2x + 5)/x) = 1, so 2x + 5 = 10x.
- 3. 3/2. Changing to base 2: log₂ 8 ÷ log₂ 4 = 3 ÷ 2.
